ziplock bags and my favorite fit books

Happy Wednesday! Got to go to the magical land of Costco last night

photo

When I got blood drawn last spring (and didn’t pass out, score!), they told me my Vitamin D was low. So now, about 3/4 of a year later, I’m doing something about it. Way to be on top of things, Karina. That huge bucket of pills was only $5 on sale! Got some chips & guac for a work potluck later this week, and I’m going to try out these Detour Simple bars (they claim clean ingredients, but I’m pretty sure some of them are dirty. Oh well.). I ate quite a few samples (best part), so I wasn’t very hungry for dinner, oops. Rosé counts for dinner, right? Speaking of eats, let’s move on to What I Ate Wednesday… actually from Tuesday…and Monday. And there are a lot of Ziploc bags.

breakfast

mixed together a vanilla Chobani 100, 1 cup of Kashi GoLean Crunch, sliced strawberries. Ate a banana mid-morning

I am so excited to have cereal back in my life this week!! I try not to buy cereal, because I always eat the entire box in one sitting. I am practicing good self-control this week, yay!

lunch

A hodgepodge of Ziplocs! I made turkey & pickle roll-ups, dipped NutThins crackers in hummus and a pear

snacks

photo 4

Light string cheese, Kind bar (<—if you haven’t tried this kind – Kind, get it!? – yet, you are missing out!)

In addition to those snacks, I also reached for some Dove chocolate(s). I was definitely craving sugar after staying up so late watching The Bachelor Monday night (after 9pm, whoa).

dinner

So, this dinner is actually from Monday night. It is a lot more fun (and healthier) than my samples-from-Costco dinner last night! (It’s okay, I got some extra cardio in after eating all. the. samples. since I never remember where I park and wander the lot pushing my grocery haul for a few minutes).

Oh, how I love WhichWich. I probably annoy everyone in there, since I tend to fill out a couple different bags before making my final decision. I think this one is a keeper, though! I opted for a turkey Lettucewich with hummus, carmelized onions, avocado, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, mushrooms, salt, pepper and garlic. AMAZING.

My Favorite Fit Books

Since I’ve been reading HIIT It! this week (<—incredible, go read it!), it made me start thinking about all of the fitness/health books I’ve read over the years. There were a lot of bad/unhealthy ones that include tips on being “skinny” and quick fixes. I prefer books that promote an overall healthy lifestyle, and ones that give me new, exciting ideas for workouts and meals.

photo 12

I am most of the way through Gina’s book, and I love the way she promotes a balanced lifestyle and rest days! As she mentions in the book, she used to be a slave to cardio machines, never giving her body time to rest, and eating “diet” foods…a routine of which I’m very familiar! The shorter, HIIT workouts are actually a more beneficial type of exercise than much longer cardio sessions (LESS IS MORE!). Plus, her recipes are AWESOME!

photo 8

This book is the first one to introduce me to higher-intensity exercises (with HIIT principles) and weight lifting. I completed the 30 day guide my junior year of college and loved the changes I saw in my body… I gained some good muscle and stopped looking so scrawny after being a cardio queen for so long. I was definitely one of the only women in the weights section (especially those cable machines… they used to scare the crap out of me!), and it made me feel strong and confident! Jillian is a bad ass. She kind of scares me too.

photo 14

This book introduced me to the concept of clean eating (well, Oxygen magazine did, but same deal). This is the only type of “diet” that has ever made sense to me. No counting calories and you just feel good when you are eating clean, whole foods. I have more energy, my skin is more clear, and I have less digestive issues (sorry) when I eat this way!

  • Push, Chalene Johnson

photo 11

So, this technically isn’t a “fitness book” per se, but I think it’s healthy to set goals for yourself (fitness/health related or not). Chalene has great tips for reaching your goals while focusing on your main “push goal” the whole way (and no, it’s not a book about pregnancy as Brent thought when we first started dating).

This book was a great complement to the Eat-Clean Diet book when I was first learning about lifting weights. It gave me a lot of different exercises for specific muscle groups.

I just love Maria Menounos! She seems to have a really relax approach (not relaxed workouts) to diet and fitness; she shows you how to get fit with little equipment and monetary resources. She used to be 40 pounds heavier than she is now, and she obviously looks fantastic, so this one is worth your time!

In My Shopping Cart…

Currently in my Amazon cart are…

Although I’m not a huge fan of the “skinny” concept, I have followed Sarah’s blog and watched her YouTube videos for years, and this girl does not mess around! She seems really down-to-earth and is super knowledgeable about fitness and exercise.

photo 7

I haven’t heard many reviews about this book, but I’m slightly obsessed with Cameron Diaz, and I’ll believe whatever she says.

photo 6

Karena and Katrina of ToneItUp just announced their new book which releases in May. You better believe I’m pre-ordering it! I have been a ToneItUp since they started offering a membership with their diet program. I don’t always follow their eating plan…

but when I do, it WORKS. They are so adorable, annnnd… don’t you think they need a 3rd member (KARINA?!! Come on!).

Anywho, I hope this post gives you some good ideas for new reads! Let me know if you have any other recommendations!

What did you get during your last Costco adventure? Specifically, which samples?!

What did you eat this Wednesday?

Have you read any of these books? Thoughts?
